JSUCUS University Scholars Application

This application should be completed only by Jackson State University tenure-track faculty members wishing to apply for the University Scholars Program. The Center requires awardees to (1) work with an approved mentor on the project, (2) participate in an initial meeting of all University Scholars, (3) work full-time on the research project during the grant period, (4) complete a progress report, (5) present their project findings at the University Scholars Symposium, (6) submit a paper copy and an electronic copy of the final research essay to the Center by September 30, 2009, (7) submit their research essays for publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals and (8) complete post-grant reporting requirements.

A completed application must include (1) completed copy of this application form, (2) proposal narrative, (3) budget summary, (4) curriculum vitae, (5) letter of reference, (6) name and contact information for proposed mentor and (7) letter of support from proposed mentor.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

The application and supporting materials listed above must be received no later than August 29, 2008. If you do not receive confirmation that the Center has received your application, please contact us at 601 979-6949 or jsucus@jsums.edu. An incomplete and/or late application may not be considered for funding.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

A one-page report will be due by May 1, 2010 for successful applicants. This report should include a brief description of what was accomplished, citations for papers submitted/published, relevant presentations, and proposals submitted or funded as a result of the grant award.

RESTRICTIONS/CONDITIONS

- The recipient must not hold any teaching or other service-rendering appointments during the grant period (June – July 2009).
- The recipient must continue at Jackson State University through the academic year following the summer of the grant. If the recipient does not remain at JSU, the amount of the grant must be repaid.
- Acknowledgment of the source of support must be included in any publication resulting from the project funded by this grant. (Grant recipients are requested to provide the Center with copies of publications or announcements of presentations resulting from this grant.
- The Center privileges applications from faculty who have nor previously received University Scholars grants. It is unlikely that a grant will be awarded to an individual more than once in three consecutive academic years.

  • PROJECT INFORMATION

  • If yes, a copy of your approved Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research form must be filed with the Center for University Scholars prior to the research period.

  • Briefly describe the objectives, methods and expected results of the project. The abstract should be written such that a non-specialist can understand it. The abstract is not a substitute for the required proposal narrative.

  • GRADUATE ASSISTANT INFORMATION

    Graduate assistants must be enrolled full-time at JSU during the summer term. The pay rate is $7/hour for master’s students and $10/hour for doctoral students. They may work a maximum of 20 hours per week for the eight weeks of the project. Hence, the maximum salary for an assistant is $1120 for master’s students and $1600 for doctoral students. Only one graduate assistant is funded per project.

  • PROPOSED RESEARCH MENTOR

    The mentor must be a distinguished scholar in the project's field or discipline with significant research experience evidenced by publication history and reputation. The mentor must be willing to read the proposal and drafts of the research essay, make suggestions to facilitate the research and participate in the University Scholars Symposium (November 5-6, 2009). A letter of support must be forwarded to the Center from the proposed mentor agreeing to these responsibilities. He or she must not be employed or otherwise affiliated with Jackson State University.

    The reference, i.e. the author o the reference letter, must be a distinguished scholar in a relevant field whose letter speaks to the merits of the project. He or she must not be employed or otherwise affiliated with Jackson State University.

    Please do not include salaries in the budget summary. The salary of the principal investigator is $10,000 for the grant period regardless of the underlying academic term salary for the applicant. Salaries for graduate assistantships are fixed (please see graduate assistant information above). Only one graduate assistant will be funded per project.

    The combined costs of the equipment, supplies and miscellaneous sub-totals must be less than $4,000. Title to and ownership of equipment purchases is vested in JSU and the applicant's department/unit or the Center for University Scholars not the successful applicant. Equipment, supplies and miscellaneous items must be ordered through the Center. The Center does not provide purchasing authority to successful applicants. All requests must be directly related to this project.

    Do not include fringe benefits, tuition and fees, journal subscriptions, office equipment, computers, computer time or computer supplies. The Center will not pay for these items.

  • PROPOSAL NARRATIVE


    The proposal must be in narrative form and be no longer than six single-spaced (or twelve double-spaced) pages with font type no smaller than 11pt. The narrative should be written such that a non-specialist can understand it in plain language and free of jargon. It should be clearly focused, well organized and cover the following areas:

    (1) the nature and objectives of the project including the specific aspect to be investigated, the importance of the problem and the difference the
    expected results of the project will make;
    (2) the analytical framework for the project including the basic ideas or research questions to be explored, the approach to be taken and the relationship of the proposed project to the broader literature on the subject;
    (3) the plan and method(s) of research including the specific data collection and analysis tasks to be performed, a timeline for performing those tasks
    and an explanation of the particular methods were selected;
    (4) the significance of the research to the field and/or discipline, to applications and to the university;
    (5) the plans to disseminate the findings and attract external continuation funds including venues for publication and presentation and agencies of entities likely to provide additional material support; and
    (6) a bibliography or reference list.

    Supplemental Materials. Completion of this online application does not constitute a completed application packet. The Center must also receive the required reference letter and mentor support letter. These letters can be faxed to ext. 6950 or e-mailed to jsucus@jsums.edu. (E-mailed letters should be followed up by print letters that are mailed or delivered to the Center.)

    Notification of Department Chair. Please know that that each completed application will also be forwarded to your department chair. This is to ensure that he or she is aware of your application. Department chairs are not a part of the evaluation process.
